August Training Summary
Cycling
October Mileage – 135 miles
2017 Mileage – 3,310 miles
October Duration – 10 hrs, 38 min
2017 Duration – 250 hrs, 9 min
As you can see, the first part of the month was really light. In fact, the 2 rides at the end of the first week were kind of flukes as I really had not planned on riding during that time. The .25 mile ride was in my back yard with the kids as we were working to layout our fat bike loop for the winter. The 8.4 mile ride was a test ride on a demo Pivot Mach 429 Trail.
Most of my rides after that were on my trainer except for 2 of them. One was a short gravel ride and the other was a trail ride in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula around the Churning Rapids Trails, outside of Hancock. I love riding there. It’s a bit of a hidden gem and not marked well. You can get yourself lost, but I kind of know my way around out there and can put together a nice loop to ride. I just find it to be a really peaceful place to ride.
As far as my trainer rides go… It’s been mostly light spining in recovery zone, just to get my legs moving again to start into some base training soon.
Running
October Mileage – 15.7 miles
2017 Mileage – 129 miles
October Duration – 2 hrs, 9 min
2017 Duration – 19 hrs, 35 min
I started running the last couple weeks of the month, but only a couple times per week. It has been short runs, but I did get out on a couple of very technical trails for 2 of the runs. I do enjoy the trail running for sure. I think, because it is so simple.
Strength
A few weeks after the Marji Gesick, I started fitting in some strength work and it seems to be going well. I’m not getting the time into it that I would like, but it is happening and feels good. I definitely have a need to build more leg strength off the bike, along with continued core and upper body strength for all around fitness, with the main focus points being legs and back right now.
Nutrition
I went ahead and ordered my Fitness Nutrition Specialist study material from ACE (American Council on Exercise). It’s just a starting point for some basics. It’s not enough education or practice for me to provide nutrition related services, but will help me with some basics and likely give me some better resources to provide people. More to come on it I guess. I’ll let you know what I think of it once completed.

I thought they wrote up a nice article. Thanks Brad O’Neil from ECM Post Review. I posted a picture of it, but you can read the article here: NB resident completes 100-mile mountain bike challenge
